Read the excerpt from “Tools of the Spymaster."

Both the British and the Americans frequently used horseback riders to carry messages, and both sides tried to capture the riders and get the messages. The rider who lost one of Washington's important messages was Tallmadge himself. It happened when Tallmadge and some of his men were attacked by British troops near the Connecticut–New York border. Tallmadge escaped unharmed but lost a saddlebag full of secret papers.

Luckily, Tallmadge's code did not fall into British hands. But among the papers was a letter from Washington in which he carelessly gave the name and address of an agent, George Higday, saying that he was a man who would probably "convey intelligence to me." Higday was arrested, but he had managed to destroy all evidence of spying. That move probably saved him from hanging.

Which statement best expresses the central idea of the excerpt?

The difference between two numbers is 20. If 2 times the smaller number is 10 less than 30, what are the two numbers

Answers

Answer:

10 = Smaller number, 30 = bigger number

Explanation: Hello!

-Difference between two numbers is 20
-2 times the smaller number is 10 less than 30
What are the numbers?

The first thing you can find is that 10 less than 30 is 30-10, or 20.
Now you know that 2 times the smaller number is 20.  You can also find that since 2 times the smaller number is 20, you can divide 20 by 2 to find what the smaller number is.  You can also represent this as an equation.
x = smaller number
2x = 20
__ = __
2        2

x = 10

The smaller number is 10.

You also know that the difference between the two numbers is 20.  You know one of the numbers is 10, and that is the smaller one.  Add 20 to the smaller number to find the quantity of the larger number.

10 + 20 = 30.

The larger number equals 30 and the smaller number equals 10.

You can check your work by going back to the information given.  2 times the smaller number (10) is 10 less than 30.  Remember x = smaller number.

2x = 30 - 10
2x = 20
x = 10

Let's say y is the larger number

x + 20 = y
10 + 20 = y
30 = y

Your answer is correct that the smaller number equals 10 and the larger number equals 30.

I hope this helps you!

Elizabeth's Settlement did not sit well with a lot of English Catholics. They had been allowed to practice their religion freely under Queen Mary, Elizabeth's sister, but now they were being pressured.

Why did Catholic opposition grow following Mary's arrival in England?

The combination of Mary's appearance and the Pope's influence was the main factor. Mary served as a constant reminder that there was a legitimate Catholic heir to the throne at home and abroad, and that, with the Pope's approval, willing Catholic rebels could persuade themselves that they were serving God. In the Elizabethan era, nearly all members of the upper class lived in enormous homes. The wealthy were typically highly stingy and particularly ate most of the meat, while the underprivileged received fruits and vegetables. My Bed is a Boat by Robert Louis Stevenson

My bed is like a little boat;
Nurse helps me in when I embark;
She girds me in my sailor’s coat
And starts me in the dark.

At night I go on board and say
Good-night to all my friends on shore;
I shut my eyes and sail away
And see and hear no more.

And sometimes things to bed I take,
As prudent sailors have to do;
Perhaps a slice of wedding-cake,
Perhaps a toy or two.

All night across the dark we steer;
But when the day returns at last,
Safe in my room beside the pier,
I find my vessel fast.
