The Railway Children
By Edith Nesbit

Chapter I, The Beginning of Things

They were not railway children to begin with. I don't suppose they had ever thought about railways except as a means of getting to Maskelyne and Cook's, the Pantomime, Zoological Gardens, and Madame Tussaud's. They were just ordinary suburban children, and they lived with their Father and Mother in an ordinary red-brick-fronted villa, with coloured glass in the front door, a tiled passage that was called a hall, a bath-room with hot and cold water, electric bells, French windows, and a good deal of white paint, and 'every modern convenience', as the house-agents say.

There were three of them. Roberta was the eldest. Of course, Mothers never have favourites, but if their Mother HAD had a favourite, it might have been Roberta. Next came Peter, who wished to be an Engineer when he grew up; and the youngest was Phyllis, who meant extremely well.

Mother did not spend all her time in paying dull calls to dull ladies, and sitting dully at home waiting for dull ladies to pay calls to her. She was almost always there, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them to do their home-lessons. Besides this she used to write stories for them while they were at school, and read them aloud after tea, and she always made up funny pieces of poetry for their birthdays and for other great occasions, such as the christening of the new kittens, or the refurnishing of the doll's house, or the time when they were getting over the mumps.

These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely nursery with heaps of toys, and a Mother Goose wall-paper. They had a kind and merry nursemaid, and a dog who was called James, and who was their very own. They also had a Father who was just perfect—never cross, never unjust, and always ready for a game—at least, if at any time he was NOT ready, he always had an excellent reason for it, and explained the reason to the children so interestingly and funnily that they felt sure he couldn't help himself.

You will think that they ought to have been very happy. And so they were, but they did not know HOW happy till the pretty life in the Red Villa was over and done with, and they had to live a very different life indeed.

The dreadful change came quite suddenly.

The above question wants to analyze your writing ability, in addition to wanting to read a personal account written by you. For that reason, I can't write this essay for you, but I'll show you how to write it.

First, you must know that a narrative essay is a text where you tell a story, in this case, you need to tell a story about yourself, about a memory from your childhood.

Based on this, you should write your essay as follows:

Introduction: Present the memory you will present, giving basic information about it.

Body: Write down paragraphs, showing how this memory happened, show the event it represents, what you did in that event, what you felt, what you visualized, and all the necessary details for your reader to have a lot of information about this memory.

Conclusion: Show how this memory was important and represents a special moment.

This is because items in a series will sound grammatically correct if separated by a conjunction. A might seem like an ideal answer but a comma splice is using a comma to link two independent clauses.

This is because if you don’t add the commas then the sentence would be a run on sentence. You would be out of breath if there were no commas, so it is necessary.

Answers

Answer:

"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness."

Explanation:

Because a dog is a faithful companion who would never forsake him even in terrible circumstances, the speaker indicates that he admires these qualities about dogs more than he does about human.

He adds that dogs are reliable and trustworthy. The speaker admires and respects these characteristics, yet he finds them lacking in the average human being.

Historical Perspectives When
Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales,
England was experiencing dramatic
political and social change as a
middle class began to emerge from
the feudal system. How is this
development reflected in the
Prologue?

Answers

After reading the Prologue of "The Canterbury Tales," we can say the following about how Chaucer shows the dramatic political and social change:

The emergence of the middle class and the abandonment of the feudal system are all reflected in the Prologue.Among the several characters listed by Chaucer, the knight is the only one representing the feudal system and its old values. The other characters, like the new middle class, question the system, the rules, and the values that had been so prevalent. They have their own interpretations of right and wrong. The characters' ideas of what is moral and their religious beliefs are loose, all of which are results of the drastic social changes that occurred.

There are several characters in "The Canterbury Tales" on a pilgrimage to visit a saint's tomb.

Most of them serve as an allegory to the social changes happening in England at the time when the story was written.

With the exception of the knight, the characters represent the new middle class that emerged from the feudal system.

The knight is the only one of noble birth and whose values have remained unchanged.

Characters such as the Wife of Bath and the Pardoner have loose morals. They are not attached to what society and the Church expect from them.

They live their lives by their own standards and make their own interpretations concerning what is right and what is not.

On the other hand, many people would say that they have specific favorite seasons or times of year. How do you feel? Do you have a favorite season, or do you always look forward to whatever is to come? Why?

Answers

An example of a personal opinion answering the questions about having a favorite season or not is the following:

I would say I am similar to the author. I too spend one season looking forward to the next.

Of course, I appreciate each season. But I think it is just human nature to think the future is better than the present. I look forward to spring because of its beauty. But, once spring comes, I look forward to summer because of its warmth and fun, and so on.

This question asks for a personal opinion. In order to answer it, just think about how you usually feel each season.

Ask yourself if you are always anxious or excited about the next season rather than about the one in the present moment.

Once you realize how you usually feel, ask yourself why you feel that way.

Passage 1

[1]Nothing that comes from the desert expresses its extremes better than the unhappy growth of the
tree yuccas.Tormented, thin forests of it stalk drearily in the high mesas, particularly in that
triangular slip that fans out eastward from the meeting of the Sierras and coastwise hills. The
yucca bristles with bayonet-pointed leaves, dull green, growing shaggy with age like an old
[5] man's tangled gray beard, tipped with panicles of foul, greenish blooms. After its death, which is
slow, the ghostly hollow network of its woody skeleton, with hardly power to rot, makes even
the moonlight fearful. But it isn't always this way. Before the yucca has come to flower, while
yet its bloom is a luxurious, creamy, cone-shaped bud of the size of a small cabbage, full of
sugary sap, the Indians twist it deftly out of its fence of daggers and roast the prize for their
[10] own delectation.

Passage 2

[1]I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
[5]Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
[10]Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
[15]A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
[20]In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Both passages describe a plant. The yucca tree "stalks drearily" while the daffodil "dances." What does this word choice reveal about how the two passages view nature?

Passage 1 views nature as boring while Passage 2 views natures as exciting.
Passage 1 views nature as enlightening while Passage 2 views nature as depressing.
