American author and humorist Mark Twain (1835-1910) wrote the following essay near the end of his life, around 1900, although the passage was not published until 1923, thirteen years after his death. Read the passage carefully. Then, in a well-organized essay, analyze the rhetorical strategies Twain uses to establish his position on the nature of patriotism.

Answers

After reading the essay, we were able to identify the use of repetition, irony and analogy by Twain in order to establish his position about patriotism.

The rhetorical strategies found in the essay

In his essay, Mark Twain argues against the notion that patriotism should be cut and dried, furnished to the citizen by politicians and the newspaper, and taken by command like a religion. Twain establishes his position through the use of rhetorical strategies such as repetition, analogy, and irony.

One strategy Twain uses is repetition, which he uses to emphasize his point that Patriotism is not something that should be forced upon individuals. He repeats the phrase "cut and dried" three times, which helps the reader to understand the prevalence of this type of Patriotism in absolute monarchies and in England and America.

Also, Twain uses irony to highlight the absurdity of blindly following Patriotism without any critical thought. He notes that Patriotism manufactured by the newspaper and the politician often makes people gag in private, but they take it nonetheless to avoid being called a traitor.

Finally, Twain uses analogy to compare the training of Patriotism to the training of other things, such as morals and principles. He argues that training can do anything, including turning bad morals to good and good morals to bad. Twain believes that Patriotism can also be trained, but it must be trained in such a way that individuals are encouraged to manufacture it on their own.
