At the end of the play, Jack says to Gwendolen, "...it is a terrible thing for a man to find out suddenly that all his life he has been speaking nothing but the truth. Can you forgive me?" She replies, "I can. For I feel sure that you are sure to change" (p. 179). What is Wilde's opinion about honesty?

Answers

Answer 1

Wilde's opinion about honesty, as demonstrated through the play "The Importance of Being Earnest" and this specific exchange between Jack and Gwendolen, is that it can be limiting and may not always be the most desirable quality.

He suggests that flexibility and adaptability are more valuable in life, as Gwendolen is willing to forgive Jack because she believes he will change. One of the main themes of the play is the importance of being true to oneself. The characters who are the most successful in the play are those who are honest about who they are and what they want. For example, Algernon and Jack find happiness only when they abandon their respective deceptions and embrace their true identities.

At the same time, however, the play also highlights the absurdity of strict adherence to truth and honesty in a society that values social status and appearances over personal integrity. The characters' preoccupation with the name "Ernest" and the social expectations associated with it suggest that honesty alone is not enough to overcome the constraints of societal norms and conventions.

In the exchange between Jack and Gwendolen at the end of the play, Gwendolen's response suggests that she understands that people are complex and that they change over time. While she forgives Jack for his deceptions, she also acknowledges that he is likely to change in the future. This suggests that Wilde may have believed that honesty and truth are important, but that they must be balanced with flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Why does Charlie think he failed the inkblot test? Why was the “test” confusing for him? Have you ever taken a test and been uncertain about how you did (you can write hypothetically if you have not been in this situation)? How did that make you feel? How do you think Charlie felt?

Answers

It is clear from the novel "Flowers for Algernon" that Charlie was frustrated and thinks he has failed the inkblot test because he is unable to see any images or patterns in the inkblots.

Charlie is perplexed by the test because he struggles to grasp the abstract concepts involved, and he is frustrated because he cannot see what the doctors are attempting to show him.

Because Charlie was acutely aware of his intellectual limitations, his uncertainty about the test most likely made him feel ashamed and frustrated.

He was desperate to succeed and prove himself, but his inability to grasp abstract concepts made him feel like a failure.

Thus, the test's confusion and uncertainty most likely contributed to his feelings of insecurity and being frustrated.

At the end of July 1905, Sun Yat Sen returned to Japan from his trip to Europe and the United States. Received with enthusiasm by the Chinese students and considered the leader of the anti-Manchu revolutionary movement, Sun took advantage of this new popularity to found a new political organization. In Tokyo he established the Alliance Society (同盟會, tóngménghuì, strictly, the Society of the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance), that grouped several revolutionary circles. This society would be the embryo from which the Kuomintang, the main party of Chinese nationalism, would be born in 1911. The formation, of which Sun was named president, disputed with the Chinese constitutional monarchists both the favor of the nationalist youth and the financial support of the emigration, which the two groups disputed. A new newspaper for political formation was created at the time, Min Bao (People's Daily).

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, (Thessaloniki, Ottoman Macedonia, May 19, 1881-Istanbul, November 10, 1938), was an officer of the Turkish army and a famous Turkish statesman, as well as the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Jean Valjean weeps because he realizes the extent of his transformation and the impact that the Bishop's kindness had on him. He sees that he has been given a second chance at life and decides to dedicate himself to doing good for others.

The religious ideas of morality, duty, and faith in God play a significant role in the actions of the Bishop of D, Jean Valjean, and Javert. The Bishop's act of forgiveness and kindness towards Valjean inspires him to change his ways and become a better person. Valjean's sense of duty and moral obligation towards the people he cares for drives him to take risks and make sacrifices for them, while Javert's rigid adherence to the law and his belief in absolute justice lead him to pursue Valjean relentlessly, even when it goes against his own sense of morality.

Fantine's story is one of tragic circumstances and societal injustice. She is a single mother who is forced into poverty and prostitution to provide for her daughter, Cosette. Hugo wants us to feel sympathy and compassion for Fantine and to recognize the unjust and oppressive social systems that have put her in this situation.

In terms of rhetorical devices, Hugo employs pathos to evoke an emotional response from the reader towards Fantine's plight.

In "The Champmathieu Affair," Monsieur Madeleine/Valjean must fight to maintain his new identity and reputation as a respectable citizen, despite the false accusation that he is the escaped convict Champmathieu. This type of thinking is often used in tasks that have a single correct answer, such as solving a math problem.

Divergent thinking, on the other hand, is a cognitive process that involves generating multiple solutions to a problem. It is a nonlinear, creative, and imaginative way of thinking that is focused on generating new ideas. This type of thinking is often used in tasks that require a variety of solutions, such as brainstorming for a new product or coming up with a creative marketing strategy.

The theorist who distinguished between convergent thinking and divergent thinking is J.P. Guilford. Guilford was an American psychologist who is known for his research on human intelligence and creativity. He proposed that there are two types of thinking processes: convergent thinking and divergent thinking.

Guilford believed that both convergent and divergent thinking were important for human intelligence and creativity. He proposed that individuals who were skilled in both types of thinking were more likely to be successful in problem-solving and creative tasks.

is J.P. Guilford. Guilford's work emphasized that innovative thoughts, commonly known as 'thinking outside the box', is a reflection of divergent thinking. It's the act of generating abundant solutions to an assigned issue or problem. In contrast, convergent thinking encapsulates the ability to come to the most appropriate conclusion based on provided facts and details. It is more analytical and logical compared to divergent thinking (

Cropley, 2006; Guilford, 1967

). These two types of thinking are connected to intuition and cognitive abilities associated with the human brain.

79. Describe the tone of the alliteration in lines 889-893: "words for their lords," "sends his soul on high.

Answers

The tone of the alliteration in lines 889-893 is reverent and solemn. The repetition of the "s" and "l" sounds creates a soft and hushed tone, conveying a sense of reverence for the words spoken in honor of their lords. The phrase "sends his soul on high" further emphasizes the gravity of the situation, suggesting that the words spoken have the power to elevate one's spirit to a higher plane. Overall, the tone is one of deep respect and reverence.

The phrases "words for their lords" and "sends his soul on high" both evoke a sense of respect and gravity. The alliteration in these phrases emphasizes the importance and significance of the words being spoken, as well as the spiritual journey of the soul being sent to a higher plane. This creates a somber and respectful atmosphere in these lines. Remember that you're reading this poem in translation. In the original Anglo-Saxon text, every line alliterates, as it was this alliteration that served as the primary marker of poetry, rather than, say, rhyme. It is generally thought that this alliteration could assist the scop, or poet, in remembering his poem as he recited it aloud, and certainly it helps to create a memorable swinging rhythm. Because alliteration is consistent throughout the poem, however, we need to be cautious about any inferences we make from alliteration that has been retained in a translation. Sometimes, a translator will attempt to keep the alliteration of the original, but this is not always possible, and it depends upon whether that translator is privileging meaning, mood, or style.

How does the author use the chorus to enhance the meaning in Nakamitsu?
Select all that apply.

Answers

In Nakamitsu, the author uses the chorus to enhance the meaning by providing context, emphasizing themes, and creating a connection between the characters and the audience.

The chorus serves as a narrative tool that helps to convey the story's message more effectively. The chorus's function in theatre is similar to that of the narrator in a book or other fiction. The chorus gives the story some structure and can provide details and commentary that aren't necessarily in the players' lines. The chorus might also add humour or foreshadowing. They might comment on events in between acts or just speak at the beginning and/or finish of the poetry. The phrase "chorus" refers to both this ensemble of performers and the text they sang, read, or chanted.

Breaking News: Penguins Take Over New York City in Protest

In a shocking turn of events, thousands of penguins have taken over the streets of New York City in protest. The birds, who reportedly organized on social media, are demanding better living conditions and higher wages for their work at the city's zoos.

Eyewitnesses say that the penguins marched down Fifth Avenue in their tuxedos, carrying signs that read "We deserve better" and "No more fishy business." The protesters caused chaos and confusion as they waddled through the city, causing traffic jams and stopping pedestrians in their tracks.

The NYPD has been called in to handle the situation, but officers have reportedly been unable to get the penguins to disperse. In fact, some officers have even joined in the protest, donning penguin suits and marching alongside their feathered comrades.

The penguins have issued a list of demands, which include larger swimming pools, more fish in their diets, and a minimum wage of $50 per hour. They have also called for the immediate release of their fellow penguins who are being held in captivity in the city's zoos.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has yet to comment on the situation, but animal rights activists have praised the penguins for standing up for their rights. "This is a wake-up call for all of us," said one activist. "Animals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and it's time we start listening to their voices."

As of now, the penguins show no signs of backing down, and it remains to be seen how the city will respond to their demands.
